This is a sample story. It demonstrates the image label that appears beneath illustrations, AI-generated images and other images that need extra context. It is not news.
Images are often the first thing people see, and on social media they are sometimes the only thing. So we label them honestly. Under the image at the top of this page you’ll see an Image note explaining that it is illustrative.
The labels we use
- Illustrative: an illustration that does not show the actual event or people.
- AI-generated: created with generative AI and not a real scene.
- AI-edited: a photograph changed with AI tools beyond routine adjustments.
- Composite: made by combining more than one image.
- Archival: taken at an earlier time than the events in the story.
Every image also carries a credit line saying where it came from.
